Boarding at Ballycastle and departing at 9.30am we will travel past Rathlin Island to Port Ellen on the Isle of Islay where we will transport you to the world famous Ardbeg Distillery to enjoy coffee and tea on arrival.
Ardbeg distillery has been producing whisky commercially since 1815. By 1886 the distillery produced 300,000 gallons of whisky per year but production was halted in 1981 resuming again in 1989. In 1996 the distillery was bought and reopened by Glenmorangie plc with full production resuming in 1998.
The name 'Ardbeg' is derived from the Scottish Gaelic Àrd Beag, meaning Small Headland.
Today Ardbeg is one of Islays fastest growing distilleries and prides itself on using entirely traditional methods of production. Using malted barley sourced from the maltings at Port Ellen, Ardbeg claims to produce the peatiest whisky in Islay. Boasting several official bottlings, Ardbeg has garnered an array of accolades in recent years from Jim Murray’s Whisky Bible and at international spirit ratings competitions.
Our guided tour of this famous distillery begins at 11.00am and includes an opportunity to taste Ardbeg and learn some of the secrets of the Distillery along the way.
After our tour at around 1.00pm we will visit the Old Kiln Café for a tasty homemade lunch with a wide variety of sandwiches, toasties, baked potatoes, light bites and meals available. After lunch there will be an opportunity to visit the distillery shop which offers a fine selection of Ardbeg whiskies and other local products.
After the tour we will transport you from the distillery to Port Ellen for 3.00pm and we will arrive back in Ballycastle at around 4.15pm.
